Want to style curls with all the glamour of an old Hollywood movie? Get some great tips to help you style retro curly hairstyles! From the '50s brushed put curls, to the '40s pin up hairstyles and the S-shaped Marcell waves learn how to master the retro hair styling techniques!
The secret to getting retro curls right is to stay away from skinny hair appliances and invest in some full rounded barrel curling irons. These will give beautiful, big, soft romantic curls instead of a tight spiral. If you want a really retro feel, leave the hair flatter at the top and go in to a fuller, more sculpted curl at the end.

For long tumbling curls, take inspiration from the iconic Jane Russell. Adapting the '50s inspired soft curls, front layers are styled into a dramatic flick.
A three barreled iron or a large barreled curling iron will help create the full waves. Spray with setting spray and work the irons through sectioned hair from root to tip.
To finish use a shine serum and work the hair out. |
A great way to update classic looks is with the pin curling technique which creates a lovely loose, wavy movement without too much volume and lift at the crown.
The look is very '40s inspired and after diffusing or air-drying the hair pin up the curls and mist with hairspray. After half an hour, the pin can be removed to reveal the relaxed, unfinished natural wave. |
To achieve the Marcel wave look apply a setting gel throughout damp hair and work waves into the front section with your fingers by combing backwards and forwards in an S shape. Place a pin/grip onto the crests of the S shape in a diagonal direction and dry gently to set in place. |
