- Don’t cut your hair drastically short before a class reunion, a wedding or any other big event. Even if you’re absolutely certain you want a new look, go half way, then get it all cut off later. Unless, of course, you’re rock-solid in your decision -and have a wig or hair extensions to back you up.
- Do ask yourself what going short will give you that you don’t have now. Will a short cut make your hair look healthier and thicker? How about a style update? Ask yourself what other cuts can give you what you want.
- Do bring along photos to show your stylist. Choose cuts that are the same hair type as your own – fine and straight or coarse and curly. Bring three favorites, then discuss upkeep, frequency of trims and difficulty of styling. Narrow your choices based on your stylist’s recommendation and what you like best.
- Do consider your facial shape when going short. If you have an oval-shaped face, you can wear hair of any length. If your face is square, avoid super-short cuts. If it is round, you need height, some length and enough hair at the sides to partly conceal rounded cheeks. Also, longer facial shapes are dragged down by long hair, but if hair is too short, a pointed chin becomes a focal point. Play around with pinning your hair up to various lengths and decide which one makes your face look the best. Getting a visual before you go under the scissors is always a good idea.
- Do enjoy your new look. Get a makeup touch-up and styling lesson on the same day you get a cut so you look your very best. Ask about all the latest styling products that can enhance short hair, like curl-enhancers, texture creams and waxes.
